Thanksgiving Week!

Beneficial-Insect Flower Bed in Organic Seed Potato Field on Wood Prairie Family Farm in Maine.

This photo was taken this past Fall in early September, while we were winding down our annual process of flame-killing our crop of Organic Maine Certified Seed Potatoes ahead of harvest.

We plant Flower Beds around the perimeter and within our Potato fields in an effort to attract, nourish and protect Beneficial Insects that are predators of economically harmful Potato pests.  We’re still conducting experiments to determine which Flower varieties perform best in our Beneficial Insect Flower mix and this year we grew 17 different Flowers.  The workhorse foundational Flowers which have made the cut include Organic Buckwheat, Organic California Orange Poppy, Organic Tapmaster Tillage Radish, Organic Tana Phacelia.  Also, included are the dominant blooms in this late-season shot, Organic Seashells Cosmos and Organic Ammi.

     Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
